Postgraduate Programmes in Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers research-based graduate programmes leading to the degrees of:

  • Master Engineering (M.Eng.)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) levels.

The goal of our postgraduate curriculum through the M.Eng. and Ph.D. programmes is to nurture researchers/scientists with the following characteristics: 

  • The ability to solve Biomedical Engineering problems encountered in academia and in industry;
  • A creative and curious mind for biomedical science and technology;
  • An enthusiasm and desire to make an impact on academia and industry.


The minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Lower) or its equivalent.  Candidates applying for direct admission to the M.Eng programme are expected to obtain at least a Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Lower) or its equivalent.

International candidates are expected to submit their TOEFL and GRE test scores in support of their applications. Candidates are also expected to have the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.

Financial Assistance

Financial Assistance in the form of Research Scholarship is available to outstanding full-time students who meet the requisite criteria. Priority for the competitive Research Scholarship will be given to applicants for the full-time Ph.D. programme. The Research Scholarship will carry monthly emoluments of S$1,500, plus full research fee subsidy (i.e. the University will pay the research fee for the scholar until expiry of the scholarship). For Research Scholars in a Ph.D.programme, monthly stipends for Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students are S$2,500, S$2,200 and S$2,000 respectively. The Research Scholarship is tenable for one year in the first instance; and subject to the scholar’s good progress, it may be renewed. The maximum period of a scholarship is four years and two years for Ph.D and M.Eng candidates respectively.

For PhD students, additional top-up of : S$500 per month to their stipend once they passed the Qualifying Exam (the top-up will be given up to the 3rd year of candidature or expiry date of Scholarship, whichever is earlier).
