Degree Requirements

  • All BME graduate students who matriculate from Academic Year 2008/2009 onwards must read a minimum of 2 BN5000 modules.
  • All BME PhD students who matriculate from Academic Year 2012/2013 onwards must read a minimum of 2 level 6000 modules.
  • Non-engineering students must read both BN5101 & BN5102.

Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)

  • Complete at least 4 modules, of which at least 3 modules must be at graduate level within the subject or in related disciplines and the remaining module may be from other levels in the same or other disciplines subject to the approval of the Department. Students must obtain an average grade of at least a Grade B- ;
  • Obtain a satisfactory grade in the Graduate English Course (Intermediate Level), for students who do not qualify for waiver of English Language requirement;
  • Obtain a satisfactory grade for the graduate seminar;
  • Pass the MEng thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

  • Complete at least 6 modules, of which at least 5 modules must be at graduate level within the subject or in related disciplines and the remaining module may be from other levels in the same or other disciplines subject to the approval of the Department. Students must obtain an average grade of at least a Grade B;
  • Obtain a satisfactory grade in the Graduate English Course (Intermediate and Advanced Level), for students who do not qualify for wavier of English Language requirement;
  • Obtain a satisfactory grade for the doctoral seminar;
  • Pass the Qualifying Examination which comprises a comprehensive examination and an oral defence of the PhD thesis proposal;
  • Pass the PhD thesis and the oral defence.

FoE has developed a new module entitled “Research Methodology & Ethics” which will be compulsory to all PhD students and optional for MEng students.

  • Students who fail must retake it again;
  • 2 hrs/week for 13 weeks and students can elect to take it in Semester 2 or Semester 3;
  • 0 MC and is graded S/U. This module is compulsory for students who matriculate from Academic Year 2012/2013 onwards.

The rest of the modules will be at the discretion of the supervisors.
To reflect the multi-disciplinary approach of the programmes, students may read relevant modules offered by other departments and faculties, such as those administered by the Singapore-MIT Alliance, Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Biological Sciences.

MEng candidates may apply to upgrade from MEng to the PhD programme upon completion of specified requirements. They have to pass the Comprehensive Qualifying Exam (cQE) and Oral Qualifying Exam (oQE) (identical to doctoral students) to be considered for upgrading to the doctoral programme.
