This is a medtech project that aims to develop an intraoral sensor for bruxism. Candidate will focus on sensor development and evaluation at Prof Lim Chwee Teck's laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NUS, and develop a functional prototype. Candidate may also have the opportunity to be exposed to the clinical setting and perform customer discovery amongst the dentists and patients at the National Dental Centre Singapore. Those with prior research experience in mechanical design, electronics and prototyping will be preferred.

Description

We are seeking highly motivated researchers to perform research on tissue engineering of the intervertebral disc (IVD), with an emphasis on the endplate and interfacial tissues. The researchers will be exposed to a microfluidics approach in recapitulating the disc-bone tissue interface and its physicochemical micro-environment, and validation in a caudal tunnel model.

Description

We are looking for a bright, dynamic, and highly motivated individual to join the Ophthalmic Engineering & Innovation Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. Our lab is currently composed of 15 members and performs state-of-the-art research in Ophthalmology to provide novel technologies to diagnose and cure eye diseases.

The hired research officer will help manage the lab. Specifically, the research officer will:

  1. Contribute to several administrative duties of the lab (e.g. hiring of staffs, procurement, managing inventory in the lab, IT issues)
  2. Facilitate discussions/interactions for the OCTAGON project(an international AI project across 12 countries to improve glaucoma diagnosis). For instance, the candidate will be asked to obtain all approvals to facilitate the transfer of data across countries.
  3. Help write/edit/format research proposals, scientific papers, ethics applications, research collaboration agreements, material transfer agreements, and other reports
  4. Interact with clinicians from the Singapore Eye Research Institute and abroad to facilitate various research projects
  5. Contribute to several research tasks (e.g. manual segmentation of 3D eye images, 3D imaging of patients’ eyes at the Singapore Eye Research Institute)

Requirement

Description

We are looking for a bright, dynamic, and highly motivated individual to perform research in translational biomechanics with applications to ophthalmology.

The proposed study aims to assess the biomechanics of the lamina cribrosa (LC) in vivo. The lamina cribrosa (LC), at the back of the eye, provides mechanical supports to the axons that pass through and transmit visual information to the brain. Because the LC is porous, it is mechanically weak, and is the major site of axonal damage in glaucoma – the most common cause of irreversible blindness. Throughout the day and night, the LC is exposed to three major loads: the intraocular pressure (IOP; pushing the LC posteriorly), the cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP; pushing the LC anteriorly), and during eye movements, by the traction from the optic nerve distorting the LC. We believe that excessive and cumulative deformations of the LC from any of these loads could result in glaucomatous axonal damage. We also believe that the biomechanical behaviour of the LC is different between healthy and glaucoma subjects, and that accurate in vivo measurements of LC biomechanics could help us better diagnose glaucoma.

For this project, the successful candidate will use, improve and develop 3D image processing algorithms to assess the biomechanics of the LC in response to changes in IOP, CSFP and gaze position in a large population of normal and glaucoma patients (imaged under various conditions with 3D optical coherence tomography). The candidate will also assess how information about LC biomechanics could be used to better understand and diagnose glaucoma. This will be done using custom artificial intelligence (deep learning) algorithms in collaboration with the OCTAGON team (http://www.bioeng.nus.edu.sg/oeil/OCTAGON.html). Finally, the candidate will also be expected to provide assistance while patients are being imaged.

This is a project in collaboration with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (top 5 eye institute worldwide).

Requirement

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or other related disciplines are encouraged to apply
  • Excellent programming skills (in C++ and Matlab/Python) and knowledge of 3D image tracking techniques (e.g. digital volume correlation)
  • Strong foundation in nonlinear continuum mechanics and finite element modeling
  • Knowledge of the Virtual Fields Method, code parallelization, optical coherence tomography, and deep learning, Hands-on experience in mechanical or biomechanical testing is a plus.

Description

We are looking for a bright, dynamic, and highly motivated individual to perform state-of-the-art research in artificial intelligence with applications to ophthalmology.

For this project the successful candidate will develop and apply deep learning algorithms to 3D images of the eye (captured with optical coherence tomography or OCT). We aim to develop tools:

  1. To improve the diagnosis/prognosis of glaucoma – a major blinding disorder 
  2. To provide a better definition for glaucoma
  3. To de-noise, enhance, and segment 3D OCT images of the eye

The candidate will develop custom convolutional neural networks, generative adversarial networks, and feature learning algorithms.

The candidate will also join our AI team at NUS (OCTAGON:http://www.bioeng.nus.edu.sg/oeil/OCTAGON.html), and will be expected to interact with engineers, computer scientists, and clinician scientists.

This is an exciting multi-centre project in collaboration with the NUS Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Statistics, the Singapore Eye Research Institute, and 15 glaucoma institutes from 10 countries across 4 continents. Note that our project also has the necessary GPU power that is required to handle 3D datasets.

Requirement

  • PhDs in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or other related disciplines are encouraged to apply
  • Minimum of 2-years experience with deep learning algorithms is required
  • Excellent programming skills in Python and experience with Keras are required
